A guide to stud earrings

If you’ve been following my work for a while you will know I’m ALL about an oversize statement earring. Give me Bright colours (preferably fluorescent, or glittery), silky tassels and when even THAT’S not enough . . . some colourful plastic jewels.

However, I have recently decided there is also room for something a little daintier (by my standards!) in the dakota rae dust textile jewellery collections. Not ALL occasions call for a shoulder skimming, festival worthy fluorescent fringe and sometimes a POP of colour is all you need.

Whether winter scarves are playing havoc with your oversize earrings or you’re simply a fan of something more subtle, I should now have a style to suit your needs. Read on for a run down of my current “smaller” earring offerings.

Number 5 – Stripey geometric shapes studs

Originally inspired by circus big top STRIPES these fun loving stud earrings are BIG, bright and beautiful. Each backed fabric component is printed with bold graphic stripes in a colourful or glittery vinyl and no two pairs are identical, as the composition of those colour popping clusters will vary slightly every time.

Number 4 – Tiny teardrop studs

Younger sibling to the ever popular Jazzy Plectrum style Statement earrings, these colourful studs feature the same scissor snipped teardrop shapes, at a much smaller scale. The two components are vinyl printed, cut out by hand and machine stitched into place.

Update – April 2023 – This style of stud earring has now been discontinued.

Number 3 – Elongated scallop section studs

In my opinion, the most elegant of my earring offerings. Whether you’re after a reliable every day earring or searching for something more special you can’t go wrong with the emerald green glitter! These light weight and easy to wear elongated earrings are available in an array of peacock inspired greens, blues and sparkly metallics. Each pair is vinyl printed and hand scissor snipped into shape.

Update – March 2024 – This style of stud earring has sadly now been discontinued.

Number 4 – Small circular studs

At a delicate 2cm x 2cm, these are the tiniest of my studs. These small circular earrings feature discs of fabric, vinyl printed and adorned with laser cut fabric ‘sequins’. Being mainly fabric these are so light weight you’ll forget you’re wearing them.

Number 5 – my all time favourites . . . Ornate and oversize stud earrings

The biggest and boldest of my laser cut studs, these ornate and oversize earrings measure 3cm x 3cm and consist of three tiers of laser cut components. A crinkle edged circular base with a vinyl printed pattern, topped with a smaller, round patterned disc and those same laser cut fabric ‘sequins’. The most eye grabbing option . . . and my personal favourites!

dAKOTA rAE dUST Laser cut Jewellery

Learning to use a laser cutter over the last couple of years has opened up lots of new possibilities for my jewellery making, and enabled me to begin experimenting with a neater and more finished looking construction style. Laser cut jewellery components are precise and perfectly sized, unlike my standard scissor snipped shapes, which means it has become possible to fabric back my studs, and while doing so embed the surgical steel stud backs between the front and back layers of each pair of colourful earrings. I’m really happy with this tidier look and more durable finish. You will notice this ‘backing’ technique in lots of my more recent laser cut jewellery designs.

All three of these laser cut stud styles were originally launched back in October 2020, but will be refreshed regularly in new colour combinations. Colourful oversize studs

All my stud earrings fasten with quality, hypoallergenic surgical steel posts and butterfly stud backs, making them an excellent choice for even sensitive earlobes.
